Ad Targeting Based On Profile Pictures

I am pretty sure this is not happening, but it is fun to think what if.

Maybe it is my subconscious insecurity about my lack of hair or maybe it’s simply fabulous targeting or maybe it’s simply the advertising by deduction. I think it is the latter.

Get your kicks out of this anyway….

Coincident, probably, but what if it wasn’t. I wonder how difficult it would be to scan photos for like colors, such as face pigments or clothes and be able to determine the amount of hair or possible body size or proportion. Based on profile photos you could place ads for hair loss, weight loss, eye glasses, food, etc.

Give it another year or less…

On facebook if you go under groups and upload a photo it ask you to name what user(s) are in the photo. Most videos and photos now have the option to place it on a map. This will help with search and geotargeting.

It may not be a coincidence. I know that Google is working on this. They purchased a company called Neven Vision in 2006 that helped them to be able to recognize and classify images. What you’ll see in Picasa is their early attempt at that. Picasa is currently able to search according to the color of your photos. Quite soon I believe that they want to be able to classify images based on their content far more precisely since the current method of using a tag-based taxonomy is far too innaccurate.

I would expect them to be delivering contextual advertising based on image recognition within 6 months. It is possible, but unlikely, that Facebook has got there before them.

    Nick,
Good insight…I wouldn’t be surprised if something is out in less then 6 months either.
