As many of you know I have a passion for search and Internet Marketing and every once in a while I like to write a post on the topic. It is extremely important in my opinion to be able to generate your own leads and with that in mind I have a little tip on how to rule local search in any and every town.
What is local search? For those of you who don’t know it is when Google lists 3 to 4 results next to a map and is usually at the top of a search results page, right below the top sponsored links. In this example Google has placed the local results towards the middle, but like I said normally they are in prime position at the top.
Alright, so what do you need to do to rule local search? First, buy some geo-targeted domains. For example www.chicagoyourcompanyname.com or www.sandiegomortgagebrokers.com. You get the picture. Then you will need to sign up for Google’s Local Business Center. Once you sign up for an account Google is going to send you a post card to verify that you are actually at that location. Well what are you going to do if you are targeting all the major cities and you live in Riverside California. What you are going to want to do is set up a mail box at a mailbox etc in the city that you are targeting. This is not very expensive and I believe the they have a minimum contract of 3 months for less than $70. It may differ at each store. The leads you will receive will far out way the cost. How are you going to receive the post card now that you have a mail box in a far away town? Easy, the mailbox ect will forward it off to you when they receive. Yep, that easy.
The next thing you can do to increase your chance of Google placing into the top position and I have done this with PPC ads, is to create a script (your web guy can do this fairly easily) that will pull the name of the town or the name of the domain into portions of the web page. This would render a page that would say, “Chicago Mortgage Brokers” in the title or anywhere you write the script. Why you would want to do this is because this would allow to have only one website and forward all the domains to just that site. Pretty simple really.
Lastly you may also want to submit your website and address to a Super Pages and other local directories in your targeted cities. This help boost your exposure and give more relevance to to your site.
Thats it! Now you are ruling your city. There is a lot room for this too, so try it out with a city or two and see what happens.
Good luck.

A couple of additional ideas:
Have your whois information for the domain point to the same address.
Put the site on a different server or ip block than your other, similar sites.
(and get a ‘contact me’ link on your blog - please!)
